Terrock Technological Singularity, Volume III: Sails When?
Post Body

Innovative

1. Fig domestication: After Aila, Terrock wanderer, had found some sweet-tasting ovoid plantlife right before fining a new home, she decided to plant some of the seeds of this plant in her new home village, in memory of that fateful day. After some less-that-successful attempts, Aila had managed to coax a fig tree to maturation, and this delicacy quickly spread across Terrock lands through trade with other villages.

2. Fava bean domestication: Some Terrock villagers have noticed that flowering plant carrying a green, ovoid legume have infested the outskirts of their irrigated farms. Although some have attempted to eradicate unsightly this infestation, others have attempted to cultivate it as another crop, albeit one with a very different shape and flavour to their existing crops of wheat, flax, and papyrus.

3. Manure fertilization: As several Terrock villages now have herds of domesticated sheeps and goats, these villages have faced the problem of an overabundance of smelly animal droppings. As civilized people, the Terrock can obviously not abide this shit just lying around in inhabited settlements, so some have begun to shovel this dung out of sight, out of mind, into the villages outlying crop fields. Some of the farmers in these villages noticed that some of their crops had done unusually well, and upon further investigation, discovered that these superior crops had grown on the same places that had been smothered with shit. This practice of shovelling shit onto crop fields has spread across the Terrock lands.

4. Basin irrigation: The Terrock have used perennial irrigation for generations, which has improved the productive capacity of Terrock farmers immensely. However, the digging of small ditches throughout a crop field is labour intensive, and requires careful planning to ensure the water is directed to flow the way it is intended to. In response to this, some lazier Terrock farmers have resorted to simply keeping their fields at a lower elevation than the surrounding land, and allowing the entire field to be flooded with water. While this practice simply drowns some crops, for others it is as effective, or even more effective, as perennial irrigation is. This practice has spread from farmer to farmer across all of Terrock lands.

5. Clam beds: The Terrock living on the Great Southern Ocean's shore have on occasion gathered and eaten clams. However, this was always an uncommon and haphazard process. Now, some coastal Terrock villages, noticing the advantage of domesticated flora and fauna over wild ones, have begun to devote more resources to clam harvesting, eventually creating "domesticated clams" by moving an abundance of live clams to the waters just outside their villages.

Diffusive

The traditional series of raids and counter-raids between the Terrock and their nomadic barbarian neighbours, and some newfangled fledgeling mercantile expeditions between them, has resulted in the Terrock grudgingly adopting some of the crude mechanisms and practices of their uncouth neighbours.
