Centuries after the brutal, unprovoked raid on the peaceful Terrock village of Rotynak from savage barbarian marauders from the North, the usage of cloth slings to hurl crude stones with immense strength had spread throughout the Terrock people through the standard pattern of raids and counter-raids. The story of these vicious and callous barbarians who conducted that initial raid had also been spread along with their technology, becoming a piece of Terrock legend taught by wizened sages to eager younguns.

Vasichi, son of Druvark and Knara, denizen of Vlastidan, warleader of the Third, councillor of the settlement, master of the sling, conqueror of Anankium, was one of the councillors of the Terrock proto-city of Vlastidan, on the Eastern coast of the Terrine river, near the Northern frontier of civilization, was one of the many who had eagerly listed to the distorted and exaggerated mythos told by Vlastidan's sages. When vague reports from Vlastidan's sailors mentioned recent disruptions in the local ecology to the North, as well as smoke pillars, arrowheads, and other signs of human habitation, Vasichi was both deeply worried and intensely curious.

Vasichi commissioned a grand expedition, with a score-and-quarter of Vlastidan's greatest plank vessels, outfitted with oars and rowlocks, each carrying a dozen of Vlastidan's finest sailor-soldiers, armed with daggers, axes, spears, spear-throwers, bows, slings, and shields, lead by Vasichi himself, to head North up the Terrine river in search of currish barbarians to pillage.
