Aila, daughter of Anara and Gastrol, denizen of Granitslaw, disciple of the net, was a young woman from the Terrock village of Granitslaw, had just saw her parents, siblings, bridegroom, and several other close relations killed in a raid from the neighbouring Terrock village of Rotynak. These raiders had managed to hurl stones with the strength and accuracy as expert archers shot arrows, but that was not her concern. Her concern was that, along with the massacre of her family, the raiders from Rotynak had stolen almost all of Granitslaw's stockpiled food. She knew that, despite the best efforts of the Granitslaw's farmers and fishers, there was no way the village could procure enough foodstuff before the harsh Not!Mesopotamian winter, and that Granitslaw's councillors would ensure that any and all food would go straight to themselves and their cronies, which she was not.

As she had no remaining living ties to her hometown, Aila, along with her late family's faithful household dog, Faithless, an old canoe, a gourd of drinking water, and her handy cast net, set off in search for something better than a short life of starving to death in the ruins of her hometown.
