How should I divide storage

Post Body

Right now I have 3 storage servers, with a 4th being planned. Originally I wanted to split to improve performance and security. However I’m considering merging some of the arrays to one box.

My thought process for splitting

  • Reduce rebuild time by having smaller arrays with less data based on category. All important stuff is backed up offsite, but I do want to
  • No bottlenecks by one category being utilized. My plex server won’t slow down VM Storage.

Here’s my storage needs

  • 4 TB Personal NAS. This is currently 4 2TB Drives in Raid 10.
  • 24 TB Plex Media. Currently 4 12TB drives in Raid 10. This is my most important storage
  • 6 TB VM storage. Since I started experimenting with XCP-ng, I wanted to have a different VM storage setup. For now, this is ONE 6TB drive. I NEED redundancy.
  • coming soonish Blue Iris Camera Storage. 2 TB, probably just a mirror.

As my data usage grows, the arrays will scale, however these numbers are good for the time being. Should I put things in one physical box? Should I continue the split?
