I posted this in the QNAP sub but figured I'd get some really valuable input from here as well.
I'm looking at getting a TS-h1290FX as the main workhorse of my network storage with the intent to be:
- primary hosting of cloud synced files via iCloud
- storage of RAW photo / video files for editing
- where all my home entertainment containers would live (all *arr apps, with the potential for multiple versions of sonarr / radarr to split out 1080p vs 4k file management)
I'm also looking to have an expansion unit with the TL-1600S expansion unit which will be used for:
- storage of all plex files
My storage pools would look like this:
- 12TB array in the TS-H1290 (12x1TB) in a RAID6 setup
- 4TB SSD array in the TL-1600s (4x1TB) in a RAID0 setup (since this will be used for iCloud and that's already backed up, so I don't need fault tolerance)
- 320TB SATA array in the TL-1600s (16x20TB) in a RAID10 setup (this is for Plex files so I need the fastest read/write redundancy possible). Comes out to 160TB usable.
My main questions are:
- is this the right kind of setup?
- Is there a container / docker for iCloud? (not a deal breaker if there isn't - I could just run a Windows VM)
- Would I need a QXP-1600eS for the TS unit as well in order to connect the 1600S expansion drive to the TS-h1290?
- I've used unraid for a while, but does QuTS have a similar amount of available apps that are regularly updated?
- If I want to install unraid on the TS unit is that possible, and will it recognize the 1600s?
- I know the EPYC 7xxx has a good passmark score, but is it enough for Plex 4K direct streams and possible transcodes?
- My network is built on a Ubiquiti Dream Router - do the two play nicely together?
- Is there an S3 app so I can make backups to S3 Glacier?
Thanks for any answers you'd be able to provide!!
yep home use, and cost isn't necessarily the blocker here. I want to build the best for long term stability and I'd like to avoid the need for a full rack since I just don't have the room or cooling for it.
I didn't realize about using larger drives from an efficiency standpoint but now that I think about it , that makes perfect sense. My biggest point in terms of stability is being able to edit my photos and videos in a really solid workflow and keeping those files off my laptop / desktop since I want to be able to access them from different workstations as needed.
What about QNAP is bad? I'm genuinely asking because I only use their DAS right now and it's been fine, but the usage scope is super limited. Should I look at Synology?
My plex library on my current cloud server is well over 85tb right now and will only grow. I need to be better about removing older stuff that I don't watch, but i've got a data hoarding problem lol.
I was going to load in a 1030 low profile card into the 1290FX for the purposes of Plex as well as potentially using Unraid (initial setup).
