Expanding my storage, what is best?
Post Body

Currently I have a laptop in the basement that runs Ubuntu for AFP, SMB and Plex, through a DVD to SATA adapter I have a 500GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. It only supports 2.5 inch. I am trying to get at least a few more terabytes as I rip home DVDs and I wanted to get your opinions.

I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible. I was thinking of either getting 2 4TB harddrives for around $240 or getting 2 4TB SSDs for $300. I looked into a 4-Bay NAS but the cost would be about $300 just for the NAS, but a potential upside would be that I can expand it further later and the drives would potentially be cheaper.

What do you all think? Open to suggestions.

Sounds like you're set. :)

Considering it's RAID 0 setup, I expect that you're fine with reripping all your DVDs if something goes wrong with it, right?

Any estimate on how much space you really need?

SSDs are not fooproof though. Personally, I'd add a backup drive to the setup; at least an 8TB drive. I've seen them regularly listed around $150 or around $100 when on sale. To put in another way, I rather have an all HDD setup with a backup than just have a single SSD pool with no backup. :)

I'm assuming you are just using this for media that is easily can be easily redownloaded, right? Going with the SSD would be a better option if you want a snappier experience. Either way, buy something that has a reliable warranty. :)

Considering this then, you’d have about 2TB left after consolidating your existing files and ripping you DVDs. The question now how much stuff you want to store indefinitely. I mean for casually keeping movies, tv shows or other content to be watched later and then deleted, 2TB seems like a lot. But if you also want to keep them after watching, then there’s no clear ceiling on how much storage you need. Thus, also unclear what to recommend.

Maybe you can go with the 2 HDDs for now. Then save up a budget for a NAS/DAS later if you really need a larger storage pool to grow into.
