StreetGuardian SG 9665SC how to save footage when it happens.

Hey guys, I recently installed my StreetGuardian and yesterday had a near collision. I hit the rec button but is that how to save footage?
Also I think it records 3min loops, does anyone have experience with the recording system. For example say your 4 seconds into the new 3min loop does it save the previous clip as well or do I need to pull the SD card?
Help is appreciated, because I want to know what to do, as the directions suck.
