Or is it the perfect metaphor of life? A game is rule based and can be purely mental and played solo. A sport includes a physical component and is played against an opponent.
My practice routine uses games to motivate engagement and keep me focused, but when I play an opponent it becomes a sport; or am I just playing a game with extra mental pressure? If I play a ‘perfect game’ on my throw I can’t be beaten. If my opponent has the throw they can only beat me with a perfect throw if I could finish in 9 darts.
So am I playing the board (myself), or am I playing an opponent? I enjoy the paradox that such a simple game can become so complex, and deliver such surprises as we’ve seen during the grand slam.
And it reminds me it’s like playing the game of life. Natural talent means very little in the long run if you are not prepared to put in the work to improve and refine your game, including mentally by learning your outs. And with those two being equal it is only your will to win that makes the difference. And winning is different for everyone as we all have individual goals.
So here’s to the darts. An accessible sport on a level playing field that tests both your physical talent and mental strength.
