Voice changing helmets

I have a few helmets that are suppose to change the voice of my character. Some of these helms completely cover the head and face....and ummm my character doesn't sound any different. What gives? Is there some setting I have to click or something? Or does it actually change the voice of my character but it's so subtle that I cannot tell the difference?
