While the group cooled their heels at Silver Spring tonight, one of the players brought up an inevitable question. How exactly does one carry water around on long treks through the wastes? Of course, waterskins is the obvious answer, but once you get pack animals involved things get interesting. So after the game I did a little research and started sketching out a few ideas.

Typical Water containers (because there is a HUGE difference between a waterskin and a tun).

Tun (250 gal)

Butt (160 gal)

Barrel (40 gal)

Keg (20 gal)

Keg, small (10 gal)

Jug (1 gal)

Waterskin (1/2 gal)

New equipment

Water belt: worn across the chest, a sort of bandolero one can tie multiple waterskins too (4-6). Can be modified with a quick release knot for folks who do not want to take their water supply into a fight.

Water Harness: think saddle bags for pack animals, but each side contains a keg.

Sound good? Am I missing anything (besides dozens of historical barrel variations of different capacities)? What other gear have you introduced into your game for the sole purpose of transporting water around the desert?

Hadda lookit up:

The journey across the Sahara could take at least from 40 to 60 days, and it was only made possible by stopping at oases along the way, but even with these water stops, the journey was brutal and hazardous. That there were established routes, and that Arab medieval writers were so particular in mapping them, is strong evidence that any improvised deviation, the taking of shortcuts or the missing of the next oases through poor navigation or a sandstorm, was very likely to bring disaster. Other dangers included bandits, venomous snakes, scorpions, and the supernatural demons desert people often believed haunted certain parts of the Sahara.
