Apparently the Rat Covenant is confusing

So I had just finished my build and decided to go rat around in Grave of Saints. Guy was a similar build. He went high and I followed him, but he ran past all of the rats to the fog door. I figured he was going to try to go in, but he attacked me and killed me (my fault). I didn't think anything of it until I hear my girlfriend cracking up in the other room.
