I love the outplay potential of portals. The fact someone can steal it the time it takes to open it being able to hide behind it or bait people with the noise etc. Got me thinking of static exits could have the same flavor. Maybe there is a gate that remains locked till the torches are lit..that way it takes time to open it and you can close it behind you to trick players with the noise or being able to put the torches out so people pass by it without checking. Would also be cool if the stairs were a little longer/ actually terrain so they can be fought in/over instead of it being two steps too freedom.
