How the hell do I extract?

Obvi a new player here. I haven't seen any portals in about 50 matches. I've been playing duos and solos. I've extracted twice I think by going through the gates but I absolutely hate that they're marked on the map even if they aren't open. And to my knowledge they also open completely randomly.

I have a bunch of hours in Tarkov and extracting in that has been a cakewalk compared to this so far. The amount of times I've just dies in the blizzard in the snow.

Am I missing something? I mean I definitely might be since the game doesn't tell me anything tbh.
