Herculaneum boat houses, Naples. Many people tried to shelter in boathouses from the Mt Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. The ash killed so quickly and in such quantity that the skeletons are positioned in such a way to show what they were doing when it hit, and buried under 14 to 17 feet in ash.

I’ve been there myself, and there are several areas where you can see families hugging together. One gruesome fact is that the boiling heat boiled the brains and insides of the bodies after they had been entombed in the burning ash, so some of the skulls are fractured or blown open as when the brains and bodily fluids exploded from the immense heat.
