Most of us around here recognise that the last time we won the President’s Trophy we also won the Cup, but I am still seeing some who talk about some curse for some reason. So here are the receipts:
The President’s Trophy has been awarded 35 times starting in ‘86. Of the 35 PT winners, 8 went on to win Lord Stanley’s Cup. That represents nearly 23% of the time.
The second most likely to win the Cup historically has been the 4th seed at 6 occurrences, then the number 2 seed at 4. One of the top four seeds wins 60% of the time.
An 11, 14, 15, or 16 seed have never won. The NHL has played 16 teams in the playoffs since ‘80, so it isn’t like they had a smaller chance due to fewer occurrences.
I like where we are at. We are definitely in that top 60% and still have a solid chance at the Presidents’s trophy tonight with a Ranger’s loss or tie and if the Bruins don’t win out.
The Cup is coming home to Texas this year.
A curse for most, but not for us.
