Do all dabs "work" in carts or can I somehow convert these into distillate and add them to an empty one?

I have an empty cart i spent $18 on, got 1 gram of some pretty tasty budder and a gram of some live resin.
I was goofing and it says just cram some down in there, but I always thought you could ONLY smoke distillate, as in I would need to somehow convert this rosin or resin into distillate so it flows around the cart and smoks right?
Any input is appreciated thanks.
