Does john die quickly? If not, what does he do?

When the roof blows off, and he is waist deep in water in the pitch black with no electricity for miles, what does he do? He can't run outside, everything is even more flooded, plus the wind is 120 mph with tornadoes possible....and I won't even mention how incoherently drunk he will be like every night....
So what does he do? And how long will it take? Serious answers only please.
