Lav Mic On Canon DSLR

Hi guys
So I own a Canon 100D and I have my little youtube channel about travelling.
I want to vlog using my canon but sometimes the built in mic just plays on me and doesn't record any audio or is corrupted. I was thinking about getting a Lav mic as they're cheap enough but my question is if I can plug it in and leave it on the shoe mount? Will it still pick up the audio? I don't mind gaining the audio later as long as it will work, I'm probably won't be too far away from DSLR. Mostly vlogs with hand.
