According to The Knot 2016 Real Weddings Study, 19 percent of couples reported that their guests hooked up either at or after their wedding. And while the Hilton/York wedding was among that 19 percent, the question wasn’t who got laid, but rather who didn’t.

Sarah York really liked her daughter’s fiancé. Matthew had a good heart and an even better job. However, what she wouldn’t admit out loud was that she had a greater fondness for Danielle’s ex. To Sarah, Kyle Fish was a better version of Matthew. Not only was he kind, but he also came from a well-to-do family and was strikingly handsome—dare she say sexy, even?

Sarah was delighted that Danielle was still friendly with Kyle, and she was over the moon when she found out Kyle would be at Danielle’s wedding, with Matthew’s blessing. She was surprised though when he showed up alone. How had no woman managed to snatch him up yet?

The question lingered in the back of her mind as she approached him at the bar during the reception. The two made small talk for a bit over some drinks. Then, spurred on by perhaps one too many glasses of wine, Sarah confessed in a whisper that she missed having Kyle around and was disappointed that he and Danielle didn’t work out. In return, Kyle told Sarah that he missed seeing her as well, which brought a smile to her lips.

While Matthew had a good heart, he was also overly protective of his younger sister, Mackenzie. In fact, he was so protective of her that he wouldn’t let her spend some time visiting him at college. (“Who knows what could happen,” was his usual line when pressed on the topic by Mackenzie and his parents.)

That meant that Matthew’s best friends and roommates in college, Andrew Robison and Ryan Walters, had never met Mackenzie…until the days leading up to the wedding. To say that the two guys took an immediate liking to Mackenzie was an understatement, and she didn’t think they were bad-looking either.

With Matthew preoccupied with…well, getting married, that left plenty of time for the guys to get acquainted with Mackenzie. The three started the reception by sharing drinks, and then they shared a few dances, with Mackenzie sandwiched between Andrew and Ryan. And as Mackenzie looked up at both guys with her mesmerizing eyes and offered a mischievous grin, the guys returned the gesture…and then smirked at each other.

Growing up, Matthew was content to hang in the background and not draw too much attention to himself during social gatherings. His younger brother, Jake, could not have been more different. Jake was confident, outgoing, quick-witted and a talented speaker, so he was an easy pick to be Matthew’s best man.

Jake delivered an amazing best-man speech the night of the reception, successfully blending humor with admiration and love for his brother and new sister-in-law. As he told a couple of stories about his growing up with Matthew, he stole a couple of glances at his mother, Jennifer, who could only shake her head and laugh.

As Jake rose his glass for a toast at the end of his speech, he scanned the room before settling his gaze on Jennifer. She had adjusted her dress to show a tad more cleavage, and there was a look in her eye that he’d never seen from her before. Moments later, while the rest of the guests were on the dance floor, Jake was sitting alongside Jennifer, talking to her. He leaned in and whispered something in her ear, which caused her jaw to drop and her hand to cover her mouth in surprise. However, her eyes told Jake that she quite liked what he said.

After the reception, a group of guests walked over to the hotel bar to keep the party going. The bride and groom were among them, but the mothers of each were nowhere to be found. Their fathers were, though, and Michael Hilton was busy chatting up his new daughter-in-law.

Never in a million years did Michael expect Matthew to marry someone like Danielle. Matthew was quiet and reserved like his mother, while Michael was a wild child and apparently passed that onto Jake. On the other side, there was something about Michael that Danielle liked. He was able to make Danielle laugh a lot, he wasn’t afraid to say what was on his mind, and to be honest, for his age, Michael was hot.

While sitting at the bar, the two shared a laugh over something. A short pause followed, and then Danielle looked around the room quickly before leaning in and whispering something in Michael’s ear while giving his thigh a gentle squeeze.

Speaking of Danielle’s daddy, her real daddy spent the day going through all kinds of emotions. David York had tears welling up in his eyes as he walked her down the aisle and when they shared their father/daughter dance. But despite being sad over how quickly she had grown up, he was happy that she had found a great man in Matthew.

He had a feeling Abigail wouldn’t have the same kind of success.

Abi was his younger daughter, and she went through guys pretty frequently through her first three years in college. He was surprised she didn’t bring a date to the wedding, and he was more surprised to see her saddling up next to him at the hotel bar, away from the rest of the guests closer to her age.

As father and daughter chatted, Abi found herself studying her father. Even though she had quite the rebellious streak, she still admired him—and yes, he looked quite handsome this evening. She snapped back to reality in time to hear him tell her something with a proud expression on his face. Then, seemingly without hesitation, she leaned in to tell him the real reason why she didn’t bring a date to the wedding.

Matthew was panicked. Here he was, on what was supposed to be the greatest night of his life, and he couldn’t find anyone. His parents were nowhere to be found. His in-laws? Ditto. His friends? MIA. His siblings? Who knows. His bride? She wasn’t answering his frantic calls.

He sat at the bar, pondering just what on Earth was going on, when he felt a hand on his shoulder. Danielle’s best friend, Kayla, took a seat next to him. Kayla was quite attentive, and more than that, she was brutally honest. The pained look on her face was quite evident as she told him everything—who left with whom and so on.

Matthew sat in silence, frozen by the series of bombs that Kayla dropped on him. What was he going to do? How could everyone just betray him like this? Why did this have to happen to him?

Kayla listened to every question he asked and did her best to console him. And as their tear-filled eyes locked on each other, they shared an embrace that they both so badly needed.

I'm primarily seeking general feedback. I understand the story-like nature of the prompt may narrow the pool of potential partners, but this is a prompt I'm really excited about!

Also, what are your thoughts on how the characters are written? Are they too defined? Not defined enough?

I toyed with the idea of including some kind of sexual interaction within each section, but ultimately decided not to in order to have more flexibility once we do reach the sex scenes.
