Long-Term
I definitely want to play with the romantic ideals of settling the wild frontiers, but still have access to other characters and settings. Depending on what we want the modest homestead could grow into a prosperous farm/plantation, or maybe something like a feudal estate/manor or village/town/castle. I am open to ideas and creativity. Of the three flavours the fantasy one seems the most promising at the moment.
The strange and wonderful wilds are right on my doorstep. The nearest neighbour is far, far away. It is the untamed nature that surrounds this little haven I have carved out for myself. It's a simple homestead: a dwelling, a tended field and some animals. I have built it up overtime into something special.
I did not come from this place. I was born far, far away but my journey brought me here and I have decided to make it my home. I take great pride in bringing the wilderness to heel and creating something productive, but I am respectful of the environment. Still, the soil is rich and can support bountiful crops and healthy herds, there's no reason to think that I couldn't build something prosperous here.
The work is lonely though at times. When it becomes too bad I visit the nearest village, or go further and travel into town. I speak the local language, but there is a cultural gap between myself and the locals. I know they look at me strangely, this beastly man who dwells on the frontier who brings in pelts, herbs, crops, and other goods to market. I, indeed, look quite different from them. Tall, broad shouldered, and strong. Some of the locals call me Bear, Bull, or Beast in their local language. I blushed crimson when I learned that.
I live close enough that sometimes people from the village wander out to my domain. I think they are curious. I greet them warmly and if they approach I share some drink and food with them, as is custom. The area is rich in game, medicinal plants, and other things, some things harder to measure in value. This fertile, forested valley that I call my home calls to others.
Who is it that appears on my homestead one day, or who do I meet? Are you a runaway? A girl whose terrible life made her risk it all and flee to the hope of something better? Are you the young woman who is curious about the strange outsider and we make eyes at each other when I come into town? Are you a visitor who comes upon me unexpected and returns that our union was fruitful? Or, does your family arrange a marriage for its own reasons? Or, a small group of friends, relations, or sisters head out boldly for something new for themselves and find themselves at my door?
Thematic Flavour
Fantasy
My character has made his home on the edge of the Elflands. Perhaps the land that I call my home was a gift from an Elven King who saved me from Goblin capture, or for service I did for him during a long, brutal war. He offered to send me back free of cost or any reward I could dream of but I asked to remain in his lands and make a home there. The King, amused, granted me my wish and set aside lands on the frontier for me to make my home.
I am the only human for many, many leagues, deep within the Elven Kingdom. The Elven women are fair-skinned, and strikingly beautiful. I spot them moving through the woods and exploring the environment or hunting. They seem curious about the strange man in their presence. Their culture is quite different from my own and I have much to learn about my neighbours. Perhaps the Elves practice different pairings than humans do and adventurous young women seek out the human in their midst for fun and more. The war may have been difficult and many are eager to rebuild and start anew. Perhaps not long after I begin accepting visitors when I appear in town or village on market day I see a number of my 'friends' with swollen tummies, full of new life. They giggle to their elf-maid companions, blushing, and stroke their middles. Does one stand out among the rest and try to 'civilize' the barbarian outsider, or perhaps seek refuge in this home at the edge of the world?
Science Fiction
My character has arrived on a world that either has an alien ecosystem, been terraformed to Earth-like conditions, or a mixture of both. There are no aliens on this world, but humanity has used genetic engineering to help people adapt to their new planet. I have arrived on this world descended from high-gravity humans and stand out starkly to the men who call this world home.
The colonizers may have a unique religion that they practice as they founded this world. Are they a strange commune of sorts? A fertility cult? A polygamist society?
Post-Apocalyptic
Humanity is rebuilding after the disastrous event over two centuries ago. The population was reduced to a fraction of what it once was and humanity has recovered unevenly. Most make a modest living off of the land to support themselves borrowing techniques from centuries of human progress. People are trying to reclaim what was lost and rebuild. Who know what wonders await in the wilds to be reclaimed?
Strange religions and cultures are a staple of post-apocalyptic fiction. There is also a struggle to life as it tends to be nasty, brutal and short. But there can still be joy in the world.
I would very much like worldbuilding to be a major component of this, i.e. deciding the environment/world, determining the local culture and society, the plants and animals that share the land with them. I could see this as a romantic story between two people, though it might be interesting to have multiple female characters. There could be a primary one, but others as well. I would like impregnation and pregnancy to play a big part to the story.
