M4F - Something terrible has happened aboard the ship, leaving just us as the last living people...and we can't stand each other.
We are part of a colonization effort to a planet outside of our own solar system, sponsored by several organizations back on a dying earth. Mars had been a bust when the Red to Green initiative encountered to many roadblocks to continue, so our eyes turned further to space for an answer.
That's when a herculean effort was made to cast our seed into space in a vain attempt to outlive our demise. You, me, and 2000 other people were selected at random from a candidate list of volunteers. Good health, of a child-producing age, and an explorer's ambition were the only requirements for the mission. And so, on Aug 03, 2050, our ship left it's boarding orbit around earth for its one-way trip to humanity's destiny.
All crew members were required to partake in regular cycles of cryogenic sleep and waking years, mostly to prevent atrophy. But also to get to know each other. Finding a mate before our destination was also encouraged, but not altogether needed quite yet.
That's where you and I come in. We had met at the social club onboard during a crew mixer event. We repelled each other like magnets. Maybe it was my joke, maybe it was your barbs? Either way, I was perfectly fine with not getting to know you any further.
As fate is a cruel mistress, we both wake to find that almost all of the cryo pods had malfunctioned so that they thawed without providing oxygen, resulting in those people's deaths. This malfunction continued to the next cycle, where people came to their pods to sleep... and eventually die.
I don't know how or why. But you and I are the last people alive in this ship, and we can't stand each other. Our mission has failed, yet we're still on course thanks to our AI captain. Do we make the best of things, or do we simply roll over and die with the rest of the crew?
(HI there, thanks for reading my prompt! This is one of my more successful prompts but I wanted to put it up for critique and refinement. I know it's a bit of a downer, but it could actually turn out to be a good one, as I plan for a few developments along the way.
Thanks in advance! )
