TL;DR
My partner and I enjoy this club. It very much has a nightclub feel. The stairs to the playrooms are a bit treacherous, but doable. I do wish the BDSM room was a bit bigger, and I wish they had a Gloryhole, but even without that, we had a good time and will be back.
Key Things to Know
- This is a BYOB (bring your own bottle) venue
- There is a cover charge and that depends on if youâre a couple, single female, or sponsored single male, as well as the day, and theme happening the you go.
- There is a membership fee, and you can get 1, 3, 6 months or 1 year as a couple, single female, or as a sponsored single male.
- There is a dress code and they mention they will turn people away. That being said, there definitely were folks inside who were not following dress code - keep in mind theme nights do allow exceptions for the dress code.
- Single males are only allowed in if they were sponsored by a couple or single female after being members for 6 months. We didn't see anyone inside who was obviously a single male.
- There do tend to be more single women, pretty much the opposite ratio to Shadows.
Location
The venue itself is a building tucked behind some other buildings. It is pretty nondescript aside from the sign and some decorations. Parking wasnât an issue early in the night, but during peak hours, the lot was completely filled. Going inaide you enter a front desk/waiting area with a controlled door separating this area from the rest of the club. There are a couple of computers here for people who didn't complete the application online beforehand.
Once beyond the reception area, you'll be in an open area in front of the bar with a few tables. If it's your first time this is where you will meet a volunteer who will give you a tour of the club. First stop is the bar to drop off any alcohol you brought. To the left of this area is a smoking room, restrooms, and stairs leading downstairs where the playrooms are. To the right is the lounge and dance floor. The lounge area was maybe ž of this space, with the other Ÿ being a dance floor type area with seats along the wall. Any tables with balloons were marked off as reserved seating. Even with the reserved tables there is ample seating even as it gets busier. The music was pretty loud so conversation is difficult (but not impossible); the DJ varies and music selection follows suit. Sometimes good, sometimes not. There are TVs above the dance floor and down by the playrooms playing porn. Can be fun to glance at, but I'm not there to watch professional porn. Lol.
Playrooms
Thereâs a long flight of stairs down to the playrooms â they can be a bit treacherous even when sober. At the bottom is a desk with a volunteer who is in charge of assigning rooms as well as cleaning the rooms before and after use. Directly behind the desk is a long corridor with a couch spanning the wall â this is the waiting area. You can soft play in this area but I donât believe you are allowed to have sex here. Youâll have a look into one room with no curtains and a spinning round bed, as well as the Kasidie room, if the people inside donât cover the window with the curtain. For the rooms, doors can be left open, closed and not locked, or closed and locked. When you get the tour they explain the rooms and the rules. There is a light that is turned on above each door to indicate if it is occupied or not. Rooms must be reserved with the desk volunteer, who will write your membership number on the room map, and then start your 45 minute timer. Condoms were in each room, but there werenât many other creature comforts such as wet wipes or towels. Extra bedding was in each room, but I believe the desk volunteer would change everything out after each reservation was over. The only room where the attendant doesnât do this for is the group room, which does not require signing up to use.
There are a variety of themed rooms and I'm not sure I will hit them all here: - A "Turkish" themed room with 3 small beds pushed together â this room can only be reserved by 6 people together and has french doors on the front of you want an audience. - The room mentioned above with the window that everyone can look into and features a spinning round bed - A room with three beds that was focused on teaching/therapy - An âAsian-themedâ room, with bamboo, Japanese writing, and other Asian motifs - A room where the bed is on a platform, with steps leading up to the bed. Thereâs a mirror on the ceiling and the walls. The bed is at a height to perform oral. - The Kasidie.com sponsored room with the spreader chair and sex furniture and the window that has a curtain you can pull across. The curtain is blackout, so if you do pull it across, no one can look in. - A neon room/acid trip room. I think this room could have been more interesting. - BDSM room with a St. Andrewâs cross, a cage/cell, and a bed. You have to bring your own toys. Of all the rooms, this one felt the most cramped and small. This room really needs an upgrade. - A group sex room â this is a slightly larger room with multiple beds, with a back area containing a laundry basket and extra linens/bedding. This is also where temporary lockers are â this was like a 2x6 small cubbies with plexiglass doors and no locks â you can bring your own locks or rent one from the front desk. This room was pretty busy later in the night and is where we tended to play the most. It was pretty packed the last time we played and there was a lot of people playing. There were also a ton of people watching. This is technically not allowed, but crowds tend to build up before a staff member comes around to tell people not to gather.
The rooms are relatively clean, none of the rooms were inherently sexy but are nice, and some feel a bit dated. The three or four liberator loungers are very nice (I own one myself and love them). Keep in mind these rooms are made for fucking in, you're not there for the decorations, comfort, or ambiance. I have seen better rooms at places like TPA or The Korral, but the convenience of Tabu's location makes up for the less stellar decor.
There are restrooms on this level. There is a shower, but itâs not like a shower room in a spa or pool â itâs just a singular shower. I would bring shower shoes if you're going to use it.
Demographics/Clientele
Most posts say that the racial breakdown of Tabu is 50% black, 45% white, and 5% everyone else; this seems to be about accurate. I would add that there is a fairly large Latin population as well. A lot of the music reflected that. Ages ranged from mid 20s to people who were probably late 50s or early 60s. Average age would probably be 30s to mid 40s. Physically, people ran the gamut of gym bod/model types to your typical mom/dad bods. There felt like a pretty even mix of men and women, but there definitely were a few more single women than men. Overall, everyone was very chill, with a lot of different people doing a lot different things upstairs and downstairs. The night we were there, there was a lot of play happening upstairs in the lounge area since it was an Anything Anywhere theme night with relaxed play rules. The normal rule is minimal play upstairs with the exception being the anything anywhere parties and blackout parties. The tour guides will explain that.
Staff
- The front desk staff were very nice and welcoming.
- The bar staff were very professional and quick. (Tip them)
- The volunteer couples running the tour of the club were very efficient and knowledgeable.
- The desk volunteer peerson has a lot going on and could probably use some more help, especially with keeping people from gathering in the hall outside the group room. Bring some cash to tip them!
Conclusion
This club definitely has its fans and regulars. There are some rooms that could use updates, but overall it's a lot of fun and well taken care of. While I would change a few things, I definitely appreciate and love that there is a place for like-minded people to come together (pun intended) and have fun. I would say this is a potentially good place to meet fellow swingers and we will keep going back.
