Smoking leaves

This might be a stupid question, I have no experience with drugs but find hallucinogenics very interesting and was wondering if its possible to smoke the leaves of plants containing DMT? I see a lot of articles on extracting the substance from leaves/ bark but was curious why I don't see more people simply taking the leaves, rolling them into a joint, and smoking them like weed. There might be an obvious reason for this that I'm missing, but I feel this is the right place to ask this.
