What are some simple tricks to make an NPC seem more real/flushed out?

I'd love to be able to give a little more life to the NPCs in my campaign without having to pour too much effort in to each one? Do you guys have any simple things that can help add a lot of personality and depth to your NPCs? I hope I explained this well enough, haha.
