How would you DM a "Alice in Wonderland"-esque Game?

Post Body

First things first, hello you there my dear reader! Hope you're having a good day.

This is the elevator pitch for the players of my incoming game, explained briefly already here on r/d100:

You’ve heard, read and watched stories like Alice in Wonderland, Over the Garden Wall or The Neverending Story, now is the right time to play one of them!

You and your friends got spirited away in a dreamscape known as the Land Made of Wonder. You only have each other, a handful of happy memories of the lands Back Home, what's inside your pocket and your heart to embark on a Journey through these strange unplaces.

Will you find your way home of will you choose to stay here?

The adventure is also meant to be pretty short and "high magic/low level", so don't expect characters to ever become overwhelmingly strong or resourceful. I'm not seeking advice on the specific mechanics, I want to hear from you...

  • What kind of tricks or resources would you keep in mind to convey the wonders of a Fey-like or Wonderlands-like place?
  • How would you create fitting NPCs? Locations? Creatures?
  • What kind of "narration tricks" would you implement to make it more whimsical and strange?
