Homebrew Items - How to know if they should require attunement?

Post Body

Pretty much as the title says, I am running a campaign and I like to make homebrew items since they fit in more with what I have planned and I find them to be more fun.

However, this is also my first time being a DM. I just want to plan a little bit ahead so I am prepping some ideas I had for magic items. How do I know if the item should require attunement or not?

Any help is appreciated!
