Enemy of my enemy, is this a good way to move plot?

So I had the original thought of having a BBEG actually try and help the party take down a mad, suicidal cult, because their goals kind of aligned. Save a characters home town from said cult, and the BBEGs plans have one less road block.

Is this a good devise to use to keep the story interesting, or would this be to contrived?

In simpler terms, the cult wants to burn the world by reviving a Phoenix, and the BBEG just wants everyone to be undead for peace.

Tell me what you think!
