Need help figuring out a motive for villains

Post Body

Hey so I am running a my first campaign as a DM. We just started the first arc and I generally have an idea of what I want to do with it. The one thing I am having an issue with is figuring out the reasoning for my villain group to do what they are doing.

Essentially this whole arc has a very Pokemon feel. The villains are capturing local wildlife (in magic crystals) and plan to sacrifice them to summon the local deity of the land. I'm trying to find a good reason for them to summon the local deity but I cant think of one other than power (and I dont really want something cliche has just "Oh I want more power").

If it helps, the world I have is very faction/organization oriented. Feel free to ask any clarifying questions if it helps.
