Should I punish a player who "cheats"?
Post Body

Hey everyone. Long time game-master here, but something unusual is currently happening right now and I'm not sure how to deal with it. Keep in mind, however, that I am a paid GM, and it makes dealing with the cheater somewhat tricky.

I normally used to run my own homebrew games, but I gave some official Paizo-published modules a shot. Everyone is enjoying it, myself included. We just have a minor hiccup though: I heavily suspect one of the players is reading through the module.

It's not necessarily too problematic except it makes the module a little too easy and doesn't give a chance for the other players to think about solutions creatively. None of them have noticed that the problematic player (Let's call him Georges) of this behaviour, but I have.

To specify, it's subtle. For example, if I present my players with a particular situation as explained in the module, the player will ask for specific checks that the module suggests the players can do. More often than not the module suggests that the GM can hint at those checks, but I choose not to and let them think on their own. But he knows exactly what to roll at any given time, even if the situation doesn't necessarily obviously calls for it.

I confronted him once, but he denies it. He's far from being toxic or salty and the group is fairly solid. The only times I can surprise them is when I introduce elements that are not part of the module at all and let myself be creative. When that happens, Georges suddenly doesn't know what to do, and it gives the other players a little more of a chance to shine. I've also observed this phenomenon *very* often.

I have of course no intention of kicking him out as all the players appreciate each other, and I do too. He's also a paying customer. And while I call him a "problem" here, he's actually a very nice RPer and player, always eager to play. I just feel like his cheating is taking a little away from the game, both for the other players but also from himself.

Should I punish him (perhaps lightly?) for this, or should I just let it slide?
