How should a go about doing a Large Scale Battle?

Hey guys! So I am a bit stuck on how to care of a very large scale battle about to take place in my campaign. My PC's are leading a raiding party against a capital city to free it from an entity that has made slaves of its people and eventually it will culminate in a boss battle of sorts. How should I go about getting them through the gates, through the streets and to the boss all while fighting the whole way? Or is there another way you guys think I should go about it?
