Balancing a New Kind of Player Reward?
Post Body

So I am 3 sessions into my homebrew campaign. It has been explained to my players that creatures are more lethal and that PC death is to be expected. So to reward great planning and out of the box thinking (such as having an imp familiar turn invisible and describe enemy patrols) I have come up with awarding players who do those things: Dragon Coins. So far they are only used to bump a player's new character to the level they were before (new characters are 1 level behind when not using a coin.)
The issue I am having is that the coins do not seem to be impactful enough. My party is mostly new players who like the idea of tougher gameplay but struggle with problem solving. I would really appreciate any ideas on what else the coins could be used for.
This game is played on roll20/discord in case that changes anything.

So far in the 4 sessions I have ran I have awarded 3 Dragon Coins, all at the end of last session.

  1. For character consistency in role playing, behavior, and combat.
  2. Creative use of a familiar (as stated before)
  3. Trying to initiate diplomacy when the rest of the party would like to stab everyone with an ugly face

So far it is just one coin to bump the new character a level, and I have let a player give a coin to our ranger who died. Do you have any pricing recommendations that take into account the effort needed to receive them?

That seems like the idea closest to what I envisioned so far. Really cool.

Perhaps I should find another punishment for character death, then. So far I have been very generous with the amount of freedom the players have (homebrew races/classes, rolling for stats, etc.) I have done this to have the players feel like when they die, it is not because their character is weak or bad, but because they made a mistake. I really want to separate the coins from the death mechanic; I just thought of that use in the moment. I have communicated to my players that the coins will most likely not retain that feature and instead do something new.
