How do you run a large scale battle?

I've never had to run a large scale battle before. At most I've had maybe 6 or 7 NPC's to control during combat. But one of my players asked how would I run an encounter that's part of two warring armies battling. I love the idea of having the players engage with one side and fight with them but I don't know how to make it work without taking literal hours
