Every time my players encountered a situation, I had them roll, every, single ,time. And I didn't get it. Why weren't my players having fun?
What I didn't realize is that only a subset of people (which includes me) finds rolling dice to be a fun activity.
The other part sees it as a sometimes necessary way to add chance to the running of the game.
But I realized, I can roll the dice as many times as I want behind the GMs screen, I don't need to make players roll to see what's in the next room. Or roll a perception check every time they look at something, I can just look at their stats!
What are some rookie mistakes you made/see? Especially ones that are caused by forgetting other people are different from you?
Edit: A lot of people are getting hung up on the dice rolling thing here. First, let me clarify, I'm doing my thesis on (among other things) Chaos. I really love rolling dice. And I legitimately enjoy failure. So failing to climb a ladder or open an unlocked door are fun to me. So while yes, rolling dice is a part of the game and most people like it to some extent, I was taking it too far. That is the point here.
Second, the real question is: If I'm making this mistake, what others might I be making from your experience?
