Advice on using a planer for my doors

I've got a new bedroom carpet and the thickness is causing neither the bedroom door or walk in wardrobe door to even move let alone close so I've taken them both off. I do have an electric sander but I've seen people say a planer is the best tool for the job. Is there no way the electric sander would work? Also is this something I can do alone? Obviously it's the bottom of the door and I would need to have it on its side or balanced on something. Would I need another pair of hands to help me do this?
