Painting exterior door help

Looking to paint the exterior and interior of my front door. I'd like to paint it in an anthracite like colour. I am a complete novice and would rather it didn't look like a bag of shit. A few questions:
1) Will it need to be sanded down? 2) Should I remove the door completely? 3) Will it need a primer? 4) What is the best type of paint to use? 5) Should I look to use a brush/roller/spray?
