Removing varnish

I’d like to re-varnish the bannister and spindles in my house but I’m not sure of the best way to remove the current varnish on it. The photos aren’t great but it’s quite 80’s orange in colour and I’d like it to be less so. I appreciate this is probably a very simple question but I’ve just got out of a very abusive and controlling relationship and have never been allowed to have any input into things like this so I would really appreciate some supportive advice. Thanks in advance.
