Spoiler: It's the same as any other niacinamide powder.

Normally we don't allow discussions about mixing commercial products, but 100% niacinamide powder is essentially an ingredient and this product seems likely to generate some questions and confusion. Here's the product page.

Deciem is advertising this for immediate use. This means you palm-mix it right before applying, in another serum that's between 5.1-7.0 pH.

To make this mixture last longer, you MUST use a preservative and follow guidelines for safe cosmetic formulations. This is not a magic powder that you can add to anything -- it's really just a raw ingredient! See the wiki for a starting place for learning how to formulate. There is also a niacinamide flair you can search for to see what others in this subreddit have created with niacinamide.

Here's a summary of some beginner Q's/mistakes:

  • Can I avoid a preservative if I... [preservative guide here]
    • store it in the fridge? No
    • freeze it? Maybe, but stability of frozen products can be iffy.
    • use essential oils or vitamin E? No, these are not preservatives.
    • use it right away (within minutes)? Yes
  • Can you formulate a serum for me?
    • No, but we'd be happy to give feedback on any formulations you attempt yourself!
  • Do I really need to test pH?
  • Why can't I mix this with another serum w/o a preservative?
    • Preservatives are effective when they make up a certain % of the final formula. Since commercially formulated products already have preservatives in them, when you add more things, you reduce the % of preservative that is in the final mixture.
  • Can I mix this with another serum and THEN add a preservative?
    • I'm curious what others have to say about this, but I would generally avoid this. You cannot be sure about the stability or preservation of the product when mixing commercial products.
