Question on laying bricks for walkway

My father and I disagree about whether you tap a brick once you lay it on sand. I think you don’t, you wait until it’s all laid out to tamp it down again. What would be the point, other than potentially making the sand not level, of tapping each brick?

I fully recognize I could be wrong and I feel like when I landscaped back in college we may have tapped bricks…
