Can I use vinyl planks instead of the Brock Paver Base Panels?

Post Body

I compacted the dirt (did not use gravel or crushed rock or anything like that). I put the weed barrier over the dirt, then layed a 1/2” layer of leveling sand. I was originally going to use the Brock Paver Base panels, but they are very expensive and too thick for my project. I am thinking about using some left over vinyl planks that I have. I would just drill holes on them for drainage and install them on top of the leveled sand. Then I would put the pavers over the vinyl planks and finish it with the polymeric sand. Is this the stupidest idea ever? How would this be different from using the Brock Paver Panels?
