Replacing the end of an extension cable with a wall socket to mount? Electrical advice please!

Post Body
I want to mount a permanent double plug socket on the interior of an item of movable furniture which will have a power cable coming out of the back of it, which can then be plugged into a wall socket and switched on.
Firstly is this possible?
I've bought a double socket and back box, so I'm hoping it's just a case of chopping the end of a store bought extension cable off and wiring it to the plug. Does this sound possible/safe?
If I'm wrong, any advice would be amazing.
