Someone knocked over a tin of gloss paint on my brand new carpet.
He looked up online how to get gloss out of carpets, and found that using white spirit and a dabbing technique with some paper towels was the solution.
He then proceeded to use a total of 4 litres of white spirit to clean the carpet. To his credit, the paint has gone, but there are now a couple of problems/concerns.
1) Will the white spirit evaporate? The whole place stinks of the stuff, and the smell aside, I'm very concerned about it being a fire hazard for as long as the carpet is in place.
2) The carpet is now saggy and stretched, and is moving quite freely above the underlay. Could the white spirit have broken down the glue, or even the underlay itself?
The guy has said that if it hasn't worked then he will replace the carpet. I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas on if and how long it may be flammable for and the smell lingers, and if it's indeed a lost cause.
Thanks in advance.
