We are novices at all things home owner. We have had our home for about three years and have done a few smaller projects here and there. We saved up a bit of money and decided to redo our kitchen because it was not set up very well for modern life. Our home is about 100 years old, and our best guess was the kitchen was totally revamped a few times.
Since cash was an issue we decided that we would do the demo ourselves and go through Home Depot to install the new cabinets and countertops. When we started the demo we found a surprise. Gallery here.
Just to explain. Originally we thought the walls may be plaster because of the texture on the blue portion of the wall. However, that texture ended up being textured wallpaper. We were very relieved to find that since we thought it may be easy to remove.
When we pulled back the beadboard we found that horrific laminate, with the black adhesive. We also found out that that the plaster is crumbling. We are supposed to finish these walls so that cabinets can be installed.
We are in over our heads.
The way I see it we have three options:
Cover it back up
Somehow repair all of the crumbling plaster
Take it all down and put up drywall.
So DIY, do you think there is another option? Have you seen something like this before? what would your advice to us be?
If you need any more pictures or information please let me know. I am at a loss.
Edit: It looks like we are going to have to go with the professionals here. Going to try to take the plaster down and get some one in hereβ to re drywall the whole room.
Thanks for the help!
