This old closet door must go but I have no ideas.

Post Body

I live in a small apartment within a big city. I also have a lot of hobbies. Enter my tiny bedroom which is my music production, closet, and hobby storage area. I also sleep here. This room legitimately could not fit two full sized mattresses if it wanted to. Not just in shape also in square footage. Yet this room works decently well. I like it.

I live in a finished basement essentially. Windows and natural light are plentiful but not a single surface is flat nor square. Not a single one.

These closet doors are just awful. The hardware that goes on the top is missing and im not precisely sure how to match it and as you can see the track below is horribly rusted from two water damage incidents that happened before and right after I moved in (I am below ground).

Nonetheless I intend to stay here. Rent is cheap and this apartment is otherwise large and has plenty of outdoor area to work in. It's quiet too. You better bet I bulletproof my renters insurance a bit during the winter where it rains here.

Anywho. I could track down better hardware for the top of the doors but like really neither the top nor the bottom tracks are level. I have not seen good hardware that does well in situations where the distance covered by the hardware needs to change (let me know if you know of any because I would definitely enjoy a quick fix)

The other thing is with my electric piano blocking about half of one door it's really cumbersome to access most of the closet space. Realistically when I want to access the closet the only thing that makes sense is to put the doors by the piano and sort of angle myself in there.

Here's what I would like to improve:

  1. Make it easier to access the back of the closet which sits behind the piano.
  2. Hardware that is easier to close and open the closet.
  3. Would be great if it wasnt white. It shouldn't be a mirror. And it cant be a curtain (I already have too many in this room)

Past that I am just looking for ideas. I am extremely handy with fabrics and woodworking and can design and create durable parts with nylon plastics. Creating custom rollers/tracks/etc and installing them is something I am absolutely willing to do for the right idea.

My aesthetic is warm, loung-ey, underground, maximal, and quirky.

It just needs to be "renter friendly" in the sense that the original doors and hardware should be able to go back when I move out. I know how to patch/spackle/paint/drill hardware. I cannot however move any of the surrounding structure. I could possibly remove the bottom track and jankily make a new one that is flat but again the top track does not seem level either.

And yes ideas that might make this situation better while I figure out something more permanent greatly appreciated. In this state non of the wheels are really working because of the challenges of the variable height and their poor or missing top track hardware. The wheels just dont stay put in this condition.

Ideas?
