Drop ceiling in unfinished, but insulated, basement room. Vapor barrier? Other considerations?

Post Body

My house has an unfinished basement room (it's half the basement; the other half is finished) with lots of exposed insulation, some bare ceramic light fixtures, an I-beam, PEX, electrical, and some support pillars all criss-crossing through and over the joists and beams.

I'd like to add a ceiling (and eventually some wall finishing) and I'm thinking a drop-ceiling might make the most sense.

The room is unheated and unventilated (though there is a window and a storm door, it's a walk-out basement).

Some questions for the DIY hive mind:

  • if I do a drop ceiling, do I need to add a vapor barrier on one side of the insulation or the other? Currently we have unfaced fiberglass batting in the joist bays.
  • I have never done a drop ceiling before. What should I know before I dive into a project like this?
