How do you distinguish between inventing and discovering?

Hello~! I'm trying to come to grips with having DID but every few days I'll start feeling all the doubt again. I've been journaling daily and trying to write down alters' characteristics, but it's so hard to feel confident that I'm discovering and not inventing. How do you know where the line between them is? Are there any techniques your T has shared with you that you've found effective?

Thanks everyone! -D

Edit: To be clear, this isn't about faking DID. I mean this about learning about your alters after you've accepted DID, especially in those times where nothing about yourself feels real.
