How do you know if it’s a new alter or just a thought of an alter?

I’ve thought a new alter showed up but then I’m like what if I’m just overthinking and think there should be an alter for this specific situation so I just kind of make up this idea of an alter who would take care of those experiences or memories but it’s not an actual alter? Bc then sometimes that alter will be more clear over time but other times they never really become much but the idea of them will stay in the background. And others I’m sure I’ve just forgotten.
