Went to bed a criminal, woke up a compliant citizen of Delaware. Its funny when you think of how easily and uneventful law changes can be, but yet still profound. For those who think this law change won't change much (high taxes, over regulation...), it will change and change people over time too.
Just as drinking alcohol has regulations and limitations to some degree, it has however become normalized post prohibition. Going out to the bar, or having a drink or two doesn't make you a bad element of society. It's what you choose to do while consuming that substance, that society judges you for. Do you contribute to society or do you use the substance to uproot your life and put others in danger?
Now, for the first time in lifetimes, this lifestyle and community will become normalized and mainstream. I'm looking forward to the de-stigmatizing of users, when people realize not all users are the comical troupes but yet the community is more diverse and nuanced. People will start to learn that weed, cannabis, marijuana; a substance that goes by many names has just as many diverse users as it does names.
Today marks the first day in a journey of changing the way society looks at a simple plant and how it treats people with a relationship to that substance.
Happy Legal Weed Day Delaware!
