How does DD-WRT list a device with no hostname?

I have a smart TV connected to internet by a DD-WRT wifi router which shows up only as * on the router clients list. I have set a "Name" on the TV which I can see when casting video from my phone, but I'm not sure if that's the same as a hostname in this case. I suspect it's not and that the router lists a * for a hostname instead of just a blank.
Anyone got any insight? Thanks in advance.
