The most popular sprite for MC I've seen in this fandom is the one in my flair--with a hairstyle akin to that of Sayori's hug scene, a good bit of Monika's face parts in his other expressions, and yellow eyes. The last part is something I've been thinking about for a lil while, and I've been able to gather my thoughts about it into something that--hopefully--isn't too difficult to read.
I remember when yellow-eyed MC grated on me a bit for two reasons.
1.Look at DDLC's logo. ^ Now look at the eyes of the pretty girlies. Green, Pink, Purple, Blue--they're all there! But one color stands out because it doesn't correlate with that pattern--the red. I definitely understand why the sprite editor went with yellow eyes rather than red ones (that latter design choice reminds me of children's OCs) but red would make more sense given the pattern we see here. That doesn't make red eyes on a bland character like MC any less weird though--it doesn't really fit. Or does it..?
2.Think of MC's role in the story. He starts off as some lines of script connected to choices masquerading as your typical VN protag, but he loses a lot of artificial life as the game goes on, to the point where he ends up as a vessel for you and me. In other words, he evolves from a semi-human boy..to a sort of camera into DDLC. An MC with red eyes makes more sense when you think of him as a camera--with the red recording light to boot!
Well then, if MC's not a fully realized tool until near the end of the game, you might ask, Why would he have red eyes the whole time? The answer that I've stuck to is that he wouldn't. That blank look on his face that he probably has for the game's latter third? Independently from the other sprites, imagine it with red eyes.
