Mono-AGL: Builds, Meta, and Dokkan's Future.

Post Body

As we all know, Mono-AGL has been the dominant force ever since Super Vegetto dethroned Super Gogeta and took the metagame by storm. While TEQ and PHY also have leader skills of the same caliber, they still don't compare to the pure dominance mono-AGL is capable of. Lets analyze the builds AGL has, and see what makes them as good as they are.

Optimal Team: Shocking Speed/Over in a Flash Hybrid

This is, in my opinion, the best possible AGL team at the moment. It has dominant offensive presence and dominant defensive presence. The fact that none of them are dependent upon HP for their passives allows you to play loose with Whis passive and conserve items which frees up item slots for more unconventional choices. It's damage potential is through the roof with five incredibly powerful attackers and they all come with enough ki links to make supers an afterthought. Two stunners, two tanks, two counters, and more raw damage than you know what to do with.

Prepared for Battle/Shocking Speed hybrid

This hybrid is slightly less consistent in ki-links, but is for those of us who don't have Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken Goku. The damage gap going from any of the Shocking Speedsters down to Super Saiyan Xenoverse Trunks is ridiculous and frankly not an option. This uses the insane power of Super Saiyan Blue Goku to pump out damage quickly, as he is the most potent AGL damage dealer other than his Kaio-Ken variant (and the gap is small). A hefty set of links with Super Saiyan Blue are prioritized here with every unit offering him some combination of Super Saiyan, Kamehameha, and Ready for War except for Ultimate Gohan who is simply too good to leave at home. This variant also has the option to trade in Ultimate Gohan for more defense with Golden Freeza if you are so inclined, as he will heavily power up Super Saiyan Blue Goku through their links but generally it isn't necessary with two Super Vegetto already present. The inevitable Dokkan Awakening for Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta is a big item for the future of this build, as giving him Ready for War could very well make Super Saiyan Blue Goku actually be the preferred option against his Kaio-Ken counterpart given the large amount of free attack he'll be getting every turn. We can dream, right? While this build is not currently optimal, it does boast some advantages. Namely it has no turn limit, as the optimal build loses one of its main attackers at 7, and both attackers at 10.

It is feasible to use Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken Goku as the second leader on either one of these builds, however the chance of extra power should never over-value your consistency and if you find you are unable to maintain consistency it is best to use double Vegetto. The gap in damage from a missed Super Attack is much more than 30%.

Mono-AGL vs. the remaining colors; now and in the future.

Many feel its unfair to compare Mono-AGL to other colors based on units that are currently not available, mainly for the sake of perpetuating the "STR is everything" narrative that has taken even longer to kill than the "Gogeta is still the best" narrative. Currently, the STR leader would need to be broken in a way that we as players cannot currently comprehend due to the fact that it would be nonsensical in order for STR to overpower AGL. The addition of Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken and Super Saiyan Blue has introduced two units that overpower the entire STR sub-unit stable. This effectively means that STR needs multiple releases of such notable power that they continue to push the boundaries of game balance to even close the gap.

What does this mean and the trap of Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken

What this means for the metagame as a whole is that we will see one of two things happen soon. The first option is regression: Mono-AGL will retain its throne as the game shifts back to more standard releases that are powerful but don't change much. Units like Super Saiyan 3 GT Goku that are very powerful, but don't really excite anyone anymore. The second option is an aggressive increase in unit power: Old units that are reborn an new unit releases are going to become progressively stronger and stronger in short periods of time and will begin to invalidate their contemporaries. A good example of this is Super Saiyan 3 Goku who was the most powerful AGL in the game until the release of Super Vegetto and now only a couple of weeks since that release he struggles to validate a place for himself on teams that aren't catered specifically to his needs. We may see this happen again soon with Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-Ken Goku, who simply doesn't have a dominant enough hold over Super Saiyan Blue Goku to rest easy. The release of a reborn Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta should it happen could very well tip the scales toward the non-Kaio Blue, making the chase for the Kaio version wasted.

How to spend stones from here, then?

If you own one of the God leaders (Super Vegetto, Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks, or Legendary Super Saiyan Broly) I firmly believe that color should be your focus when pulling. If you do not own them I firmly believe your focus when pulling should be to get whichever one is more relevant to your box. The more rapid pace that content is being released and invalidated will lead to a higher turnover in which cards should be used at what time, leading to a more difficult to maintain team. A single-targeted focus on the color of your choosing will more easily allow you to maintain a meta position and continue to thrive.
